With skill, smarts and touch of luck, S Collins Butcher’s opened for business in 1955, headed by Stewart Collins. Situated on the Main Street in Coatbridge, this little store quickly became a local favourite with unique products and recipes. It then became a family business, with Stewart’s son joining the store and learning the trade.
In 1979, the now re-branded S Collins & Son expanded to include an additional store in Muirhead, bringing with them talent, excellent meats and a standard that is to be met every time a customer walks through the door. Through these tenets, a small, family owned butchers shop grew to become a national name and winners of countless awards.
Though the Coatbridge store was later sold in 1999 to focus on our Muirhead premises, due to its growing success we soon found that the store could not remain as small as it was. So, with the help of the community in 2010, the main premises of the shop went through an extension to include a larger preparation area, a longer counter for more products, and a wider shop floor for customers. With the new expansion, business was only getting better: winning more awards like the Scottish Butcher Shop of the Year 2012, the launching of the Gold Card, more prominent social media and a plethora of new ideas and products. With these new success’ brings new challenges. More customers means we would need more staff to serve them, more shop floor space for customers to occupy, and a better website for the ease of people shopping online with us.
We believe it is now time to take another step forward.
We would now like to formally announce that S Collins & Son will be expanding again!
We have purchased the house adjacent to the store, and construction has begun on our new premises! The new extension will enable:
- a larger production area for your food
- an upstairs area for staff to relax in and a training room
- a larger counter that will include new products
- an expanded front shop for customers
- a new deli counter and salad bar
- and a hot foods counter
All this and many, many more new and exciting features to the extension that we will be announcing soon!
Current plans are that the shop will not be closed at any point, so you’ll still be able to purchase our award winning products!
After winning the Scottish Butcher Shop of the Year 2016, we feel that the time is right to share this exciting news with you, your friends and family, in the hope that the little family ran store from the 50’s can continue to make award winning products and bring a little something magical to the community.

10th March – Steel beams arrive for supporting the extension!
22nd March – Area cleared and ready to start on the floor!
27th March – Setting up for the walls and re-enforcing the flooring!
3rd April – Walls up, floor plan getting layed down and the ceiling’s going in soon so time to start getting excited!
1st June – Work on the extension had been stalled through some weather damage and other factors, but it’s full steam ahead to make up for lost time! Walls up, new chill has been put in, hanging chill ready to go, new freezer finished, upstairs staff and office spaces are coming together nicely and more work on the front shop! Exciting!
3rd July – With the inside work mostly done, work is now pushing forward with the front shop extension! Foundations started and walls going up soon!
